Reality weight loss shows inspire me …

So Extreme Weight loss with Chris Powell AND The Biggest Loser started up again, and let me tell you, I’m such a sucker for these types of shows. Now before you judge, yes its a love/hate relationship for the whole way they do these types of shows and no I don’t see it as ideally “realistic” , nor attainable for the average person.

ewl

Now back to the show! I’ve been looking for something to inspire me so I would have a want to blog but I’ve literally just been so burned out and exhausted lately with this whole prep that any of my free time is either going to the gym, extra sleep/relaxation, prepping my food, gym bag, or even just doing chores around the house. This did it =)

Both shows have their ups and downs, I really like that with EWL (Extreme Weight Loss) is more of a one on one approach and Chris really gets to know the person hes working with. The few episodes I saw recently were based in Colorado (which I thought was pretty cool since that’s where I live =)) As I’m watching them doing the stairs at Red Rocks just the thought of having all that weight, with the sun beating down on them … It makes you realize your stronger than you think.

Now! with the Biggest Loser.. They have 2 new trainers which I must say the new guy trainer is VERY yummy hahah. But that’s besides the point. This season they are taking a bunch of athletes that have basically let themselves go and transforming back into the athletes they once were. This factor kind of touched me in a weird way because no I don’t really see myself as an athlete, but throughout this prep I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve realized that I pretty much have had some kind of disorder towards food and body image for a very long time. And with such a strict diet throughout this prep,  I still have some of those tendencies (mostly wanting to either skip a meal or binge), which is hard to admit, but at least I can recognize it now and I know what to look for within myself to not let it take over.

How does that relate? Well since I probably haven’t had a piece of cake within a good year … after my show I plan on living a little because if you have ever done a fitness/bodybuilding competition or read into what goes into it… its tough stuff, its not as easy as it looks and you basically are only eating to survive and giving your body the only nutrition it needs. … technically its hard to live everyday life during prep. I’ve been joking with my family that I’m going to eat an entire rack of ribs, a pumpkin pie and fro-yo after I complete my show…. along with a list of a million other things, and the fact that my body is handling dairy again isn’t helping either lol. So as I’m planning on indulging a little after my show, the Biggest Loser made me almost scared to, not as in omg I’m not even going to have my doughnut that I’m planning on having … but it brings that reality of damn I have worked my ass off to get where I’m at and I cant go back to either being so strict of not having cake at a birthday party but yet I don’t want to go too crazy and eat everything in sight.

stren2

Along with the fear of even gaining back 20+ lbs (which I mean I know I’m going to gain some weight back because no one can stay competition weight .. its just not realistic nor really possible or healthy) My coach has been having the hardest time tricking my metabolism and getting me to be able to drop weight since I have some major metabolic damage from dieting for so many  years. When you diet for such a prolonged period of time your body becomes accustomed to it, therefore this is usually when you have to mix things up (diet or exercise wise) … but since I’ve been doing this cycle for a good 3-4 years there isn’t much left to try for me. I’m already low carb, low fat, water galore and we cant lower my calories any lower because well anything below 1200 isn’t healthy.

With that being said its kind of cute because he keeps telling me to not go too crazy and rebound after my show. And in all honestly.. if I ate everything or even half the things I want to eat right now I would A. puke my brains out and B. feel like utter shit … which isn’t the goal. The big picture goal was to lose the weight, feel confident, feel comfortable in my own skin and love myself. Yes, I’m planning on going to VooDoo Doughnut after the show and yes, Evan is going to make me ribs but .. after watching The Biggest Loser where these athletes were at their prime, they were on top of their game and they accomplished “their goal” and then once it was all over, they let themselves go. I don’t want that. And luckily he’s willing to help me after my show to do a reverse diet to help fix my metabolism … kind of nervous as to what that will look like but everyone I’ve talked to that’s done a reverse diet they were very happy with the outcome because it makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight along with being able to have some fun with food too.

So I guess not only watching these show makes me ball my eyes out because I love their stories and the emotional side that goes along with healing process through weight loss.. but it made me see the big picture of … its easy to gain it back so be careful but learn to lighten up a little. =)

Ps I also started buying a few treats I plan on having after the show!! I cant believe I have 18 days!!

Its HAPPENING!!

wpid-img_20140617_163854.jpgwpid-img_20140603_173524.jpg

So!!! As you all know I’ve been wanting to do a fitness competition for a little more than a year now… well GUESS WHAT… its fricken happening!!

I’ve been kicking my butt in the gym for gah… I don’t know how long and I’m finally at a place to where I’m close to that goal I just need a little help getting there now! I start with my coach tomorrow and I’m not going to lie, a little part of me is sooo nervous as to what Ill actually have to do haha but the excitement of it actually happening THIS YEAR (October…) is so much bigger than that nervous feeling!! =)

I’m so proud of everything I’ve accomplished thus far and seriously cannot wait to see what will happen when I finally get on that stage… A lot of people have been asking me “do you want to win” or ” are you shooting for a Pro Card?” … if that’s what I decide to do or want ..sure why not push towards it, but who knows I might hate this process, I might love it but I know one thing it will definitely be a learning process that’s for sure!

wpid-img_20140601_115029.jpg

The way I see it, with the fact that I used to weight 210 lbs… stepping on that stage.. I’ve already won. As far as weight loss, as far and making myself healthy, fining something I’m passionate about, and just being happy within my own skin. I will probably hate my life a few days while I’m in “prep” mode, I will probably have a few tears here and there and I’ll probably yell at my boyfriend for no reason at all because I’m “hangry” haha (ps I’ve already warned him … ) But just that sense of accomplishment that I know I’ll get each and every second I get closer and closer to my goal… THAT is why I’m doing this.

Its not about a trophy, a placement, looking “hot” or even a sparkly bikini (….ok maybe a little bit is about that cure bikini haha) its about the courage to step out of your comfort zone, to have a goal and to accomplish it, to have faith in the process and believe in yourself that you can do anything you put your mind to. =)

wpid-img_20140616_075456.jpg

So.. therefore with me going into prep.. I ask you guys .. or those who read my blog and/or follow my instagram … What do you want to see more of? I’ve thought out a few different ideas and I’m open to suggestions as well! =)

How much should I eat? (portion control)

wpid-title_img_2014_0507_154311_.jpg

So measuring up portions can be tricky when people are constantly telling you to eat this and eat that. Or their telling you to have 4oz chicken…. Well that’s all fine and dandy if you have a food scale but lets get honest, most of ya’ll don’t have one. So how do you know how much if right for you personally? The average 4oz is fine but say a bodybuilder at 210lbs is going to need more than a young 20 year old girl at 130lbs…. so here are some basics when it comes to portions and knowing how much to eat for you.

Keep in mind portion and serving sizes are different too. Serving size is just a standard way they measure food. Portion is how much you actually pile on your place. Both are a part of weight loss and very important.

1. Close your hand into a fist. This usually amounts to anywhere around 1 cup depending on your hand. If you look at your spouses fist it may be bigger than yours, that’s because his/her body may require more calories and thus bigger portions.

wpid-20140507_153215.jpg

  • Veggies (portion is 2 fists worth (2 cups) ..but in reality you can eat as MUCH veggies as you want!!!)
  • Carbs – brown rice, sweet potato, cereals, quinoa, beans, oats, fruit.

2. Open up your hand and just look at the palm. Depending on how big your hand is its usually around 3-5 oz size. This is your protein sizing. Turn your hand to the side, this is how thick your meat should be and or make up for the size if your piece of meat is thicker than your hand.. (you know… use common sense haha) ** ONLY the palm, no fingers included lol**

wpid-20140507_153204.jpg

  • Meats (chicken, turkey, game, tofu, steak, fish, eggs etc.)

3. Now give yourself a thumbs up! =) (hee hee) this is your fats and dressings. Usually keep it at about a tablespoon.

wpid-20140507_153200.jpg

  • Almond/peanut butters
  • Salad dressings
  • Seasonings (I like Mrs. Dash – no salt! )
  • Sour Cream and Cream Cheese – if your trying to lose weight .. limit these.

4. Tip of your thumb is about a teaspoon.

  • oils
  • butters

Hope this helps for those of you without a scale or for when your out to eat and the restaurant gives you a HUGE serving …. just eat “your portion size” and take the rest home. You can have the rest at another time =)

** Count your calories and macronutrients , don’t go over or under but get them as close to your goal as you can. Workout and be patient.. the rest will fall into place! YOU GOT THIS! =)

Clean Eating 101 – Its a Lifestyle not a Diet!

So some of you might not know what I mean when I speak of “clean eating”, so here I’m going to kind of go through what it entails and what it all means to “eat a clean diet”. (basically my diet- give or take some cheats here and their =))

What is Clean Eating??

  • Clean Eating is based off of eating whole and natural foods. It cuts out all processes man made products for the most part and focuses eating mainly things that come from the Earth to feed your body. (Nuts, Fruit, Veggies, Lean cuts of meat, and Legumes). It gives your optimal nutrition to function property and when done correctly can leave your feeling amazing!
  • Realistically there really isn’t fitness or weight loss goals that can be achieved without it. Its the basics of most nutrition and diets (with out cutting out natural sources) and it doesn’t leave you feeling deprived or hungry.
  • Feeling health, being healthy and loosing weight or maintaining a good weight is mainly based around nutrition. People seem to think that weight loss ideally comes from working out and spending hours at the gym, yes it does help but nutrition is about 80% of the battle, whereas, fitness and physical activity is 20%

clean eat1

What are the basic Principles?

  • Avoid all processed food. Whole grain bread and natural cheeses are ok, its the stuff with 80 ingredients that you cant even pronounce.
  • Eat Whole Foods. Things that haven’t been messed with like veggies, fruits, grass-fed meats, natural nut butters and milk, and unsalted and processed nuts and seeds. Herbs and Spices will become your best friend, so will natural oils.
  • Get used to cooking your own food! This way you know what’s in it, how it was prepared and you don’t have to second guess whether or not its healthy or not. Makes it SO much easier! Pre-made meals does not count as “clean eating” even if its a lean cuisine meal haha.
  • Eliminate the sugar! sugar and fake sugar really isn’t good for us. You will use very little natural sugars in  this diet because you wont need them! (stevia, honey and agave nectar are some you can use)
  • Include Protein, Carbohydrate and fat within every meal- Your diet will mainly consist of lean meats, a healthy starch (such as a sweet potatoes or brown rice), a ton of veggies and fruit here and there. You’ll fell more satisfied with this way of eating because you will be eating for optimum nutrition. You’re giving your body what it needs and once you get past the food addictions (things like craving sugar and bad carbs) you wont really have any trouble eating this way for the rest of your life.
  • Eating 6 smaller meals a day! – eating 6 smaller meals revs up your metabolism because your constantly giving it healthy foods, therefore its receiving its proper nutrition, but then again your pretty much eating every 3 hours so there is either no time to even get hungry or have your body “feel” hungry because you wont be going hors without eating.
  • Drinking Calories is a Big Fat NO- sugary drinks are obviously a no-go. Make water your first choice by far (if it get boring you can add fruits to it) but you can also have unsweetened tea, and coffee with little skin milk and stevia, low-fat milk, and nut milks.
  • Physical Activity becomes apart of your day- yes just like any other diet you read or see, you have to ideally get moving. No it doesn’t have to be 3 hours at the gym everyday but even a walk around the block is better than nothing.
