Reality weight loss shows inspire me …

So Extreme Weight loss with Chris Powell AND The Biggest Loser started up again, and let me tell you, I’m such a sucker for these types of shows. Now before you judge, yes its a love/hate relationship for the whole way they do these types of shows and no I don’t see it as ideally “realistic” , nor attainable for the average person.

Now back to the show! I’ve been looking for something to inspire me so I would have a want to blog but I’ve literally just been so burned out and exhausted lately with this whole prep that any of my free time is either going to the gym, extra sleep/relaxation, prepping my food, gym bag, or even just doing chores around the house. This did it =)

Both shows have their ups and downs, I really like that with EWL (Extreme Weight Loss) is more of a one on one approach and Chris really gets to know the person hes working with. The few episodes I saw recently were based in Colorado (which I thought was pretty cool since that’s where I live =)) As I’m watching them doing the stairs at Red Rocks just the thought of having all that weight, with the sun beating down on them … It makes you realize your stronger than you think.

Now! with the Biggest Loser.. They have 2 new trainers which I must say the new guy trainer is VERY yummy hahah. But that’s besides the point. This season they are taking a bunch of athletes that have basically let themselves go and transforming back into the athletes they once were. This factor kind of touched me in a weird way because no I don’t really see myself as an athlete, but throughout this prep I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve realized that I pretty much have had some kind of disorder towards food and body image for a very long time. And with such a strict diet throughout this prep,  I still have some of those tendencies (mostly wanting to either skip a meal or binge), which is hard to admit, but at least I can recognize it now and I know what to look for within myself to not let it take over.

How does that relate? Well since I probably haven’t had a piece of cake within a good year … after my show I plan on living a little because if you have ever done a fitness/bodybuilding competition or read into what goes into it… its tough stuff, its not as easy as it looks and you basically are only eating to survive and giving your body the only nutrition it needs. … technically its hard to live everyday life during prep. I’ve been joking with my family that I’m going to eat an entire rack of ribs, a pumpkin pie and fro-yo after I complete my show…. along with a list of a million other things, and the fact that my body is handling dairy again isn’t helping either lol. So as I’m planning on indulging a little after my show, the Biggest Loser made me almost scared to, not as in omg I’m not even going to have my doughnut that I’m planning on having … but it brings that reality of damn I have worked my ass off to get where I’m at and I cant go back to either being so strict of not having cake at a birthday party but yet I don’t want to go too crazy and eat everything in sight.

Along with the fear of even gaining back 20+ lbs (which I mean I know I’m going to gain some weight back because no one can stay competition weight .. its just not realistic nor really possible or healthy) My coach has been having the hardest time tricking my metabolism and getting me to be able to drop weight since I have some major metabolic damage from dieting for so many  years. When you diet for such a prolonged period of time your body becomes accustomed to it, therefore this is usually when you have to mix things up (diet or exercise wise) … but since I’ve been doing this cycle for a good 3-4 years there isn’t much left to try for me. I’m already low carb, low fat, water galore and we cant lower my calories any lower because well anything below 1200 isn’t healthy.

With that being said its kind of cute because he keeps telling me to not go too crazy and rebound after my show. And in all honestly.. if I ate everything or even half the things I want to eat right now I would A. puke my brains out and B. feel like utter shit … which isn’t the goal. The big picture goal was to lose the weight, feel confident, feel comfortable in my own skin and love myself. Yes, I’m planning on going to VooDoo Doughnut after the show and yes, Evan is going to make me ribs but .. after watching The Biggest Loser where these athletes were at their prime, they were on top of their game and they accomplished “their goal” and then once it was all over, they let themselves go. I don’t want that. And luckily he’s willing to help me after my show to do a reverse diet to help fix my metabolism … kind of nervous as to what that will look like but everyone I’ve talked to that’s done a reverse diet they were very happy with the outcome because it makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight along with being able to have some fun with food too.

So I guess not only watching these show makes me ball my eyes out because I love their stories and the emotional side that goes along with healing process through weight loss.. but it made me see the big picture of … its easy to gain it back so be careful but learn to lighten up a little. =)

Ps I also started buying a few treats I plan on having after the show!! I cant believe I have 18 days!!

Simple tips to help you lose weight

  • You have to be ready. (mentally, physically and emotionally) – Once you decide you want something more than you’re afraid of it is when the magic happens. You have to have a plan and a sense of determination. You cant just “want” it, you have to live it.. its not about a diet, or a quick fix it truly is a lifestyle change. You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself in the uncomfortable.  But I am here to tell you, once that light switch comes on, you know, and never turn it off. Get a friend or a spouse to do it with you, this makes it easier and you two can keep each other on track. And always be prepared for some temptations as well as comments from others …because they do and WILL happen.

  • Seriously…. no matter how much you workout…DIET IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. – yes working out will help but if you really want to be fit, and feel fit and super healthy… diet is the answer. When you eat the way our bodies were designed to eat you’ll notice a ton of different things happening with your overall health. Not just weight loss but metabolism actually speeding up, the feeling of fullness before the plate in front of you is empty, maybe some inflammation is gone or starting to fade, more energy, better sleep, and the list just goes on. An easy way to make sure you are keeping track of your food and what your eating, is to keep a food journal.. Which I have  a link on how to do that here:Keep a Food Journal! – How to When you keep a small journal with you its easier to see where your successes are and where you can improve. Also, when you thin about food and what’s healthy and what’s not it can be a little hard if you don’t know what your looking for. My motto is … if it doesn’t come from the ground, grow on  a tree or isn’t relatively “natural” don’t eat it… Shop the outside of the supermarket, that’s where you’ll find your produce, lean meats, whole wheat breads, low fat dairy and this way your skipping going every isle that has the bad things that obviously DO NOT grow on trees .. (ahem… Cheetos) ….

  • Get to know portion sizes!- So many people think portions are supposed to fill the whole plate. We go out to eat  at a restaurant and if the waiter brings us some “tiny” portion we automatically think…crap! I’m paying $15 bucks for this plate?! Whereas if they bring us a huge plate of food, we are satisfied because were getting our “moneys worth”. The sad thing is that we’ve grown so accustom to having these huge portions that now we don’t know what an actual portion is. Here is a quick reference guide to what portions are supposed to be. And next time you go out or even make your own plate, remember you don’t have to eat everything they give you, you can always take it with you =) hey… 2 meals for the price of one.. sure!!
  1. Your whole fist or a baseball = 1 cup (pasta, rice)
  2. Your palm or a deck of cards = 3oz (meat, fish, poultry)
  3. One big handful including some finger space = 1/4 cup (Nuts, Seeds)
  4. 2 small handfuls not including finger space – 1 0z (popcorn, pretzels, chips)
  5. Your thumb or a shot glass  = 2 tbsp. (nut butters, cheese slices)
  6. Tip of your thumb = 1 tsp.. (condiments, mayo, ketchup, sugar, honey etc.)
  7. And when it comes to fruits and veggies, always fill 1/2 of your plate with those (mainly veggies). 1/4 protein and 1/4 complex carbohydrate.

  • Fruits and Veggies are your new best friend! – You can pretty much eat as much fruit and veggies as you want and loose weight.. plus they are full of nutrients, water, vitamins and minerals so they will actually keep you full! .. Now I know some of you are probably thinking ” I eat a salad and I’m still hungry!” … Now answer this, are your salads a legit salad.. like if you were to order a salad at a restaurant where it takes up the whole plate? or is it some dinky ass salad the size of a baseball and smothered with ranch dressing? haha. There is a difference between eating a side salad and then eating a SALAD… (this is the only time you are pretty much allowed to eat as much as your want, and not have to worry about portion control. ) When you make your salad make sure you have a mix of greens (preferably no iceberg since it is about 99% water), a lean protein added in like some chicken strips or black beans, as many veggies as you want, think COLOR! and a oil or vinegar based dressing. I do have another link here:The Salad Bar – Building a Kick-Ass Salad! =)  on  how to make a wonderful salad.

  • DO NOT SKIP MEALS! – I swore if I hear that eating less will make you lose weight one more time I’m going to scream! You ideally want to eat every 4-5 hours to keep your engine running. when you skip meals or eat very little your body goes into starvation mode and stores the fat on your body because its saving it for when it will need it for other times you my not be eating. This messes up your metabolism and throws it out of whack confusing it and it tends to not work the way it was designed to work. (THIS IS HOW I GOT TO OVER 200LBS… don’t make the same mistake !!! please!)    But I do have good news, you can fix a slow metabolism by simple diet changes and eating a healthy diet. Annnd if you start working-out on top of those diet changes, it will speed up even more. Our bodies and humans in general weren’t made to sit at a desk or on the couch all day, we also weren’t designed to eat things like fake sugar and fillers and food colors.. we were meant to be active and eat things from the earth, things nature intended us to eat. I like to eat 6 smaller meals a day, this way I’m NEVER hungry, or “hangry” as my boyfriend likes to call it (hungry +angry = hangry) plus my metabolism soars when I eat this way =) just try it… but remember, those smaller portions should consist of veggies a complex carb and a lean protein…..

5tip5 Always keep nutrients in mind, think of how eating a certain food will make you feel after eating it … will you be disappointed? will it make your stomach hurt? will it make you have a sugar crash towards the afternoon? yes sure it will be tasty… but is it worth it? 10 min of a sugar high or realizing you don’t need to be putting that crap in your body. I think you’ll be more proud of yourself if you just say no thank you =)

So whether you take it in a pill form or drink it as a cup of tea, green tea is very good for you! Green tea is good for clearing your mind, making you more alert and keeping focus. How its aids in weight loss:

  • Well since there is a natural amount of caffeine in it, there is an increase in energy obviously so therefore you’ll ether have a bit more momentum to get up and go workout and/or work harder during your workout.
  • Its known to help burn fat and increase your metabolism. (that is if your eating correctly and getting in some form of physical activity every day)
  • You can take green tea in a few different forms and still get the same benefits. 1. There is the basic tea, they recommend drinking around 3 cups a day. 2. Pill form- any health food store (Sprouts, your local grocery, Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage) will carry this product. They recommend taking anywhere from 250-700mg. My suggestion, start at 250 and slowly build to see what’s a good dose for you.
  • Keep in mind that green tea is a natural diuretic too, so be prepared to go to the bathroom more, and be prepared to slam more water throughout the day because you’ll need to replenish the water loss you loose.

Whats up with High Fructose Corn Syrup ?

hfcs1

Oh HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) … what’s the deal with it? Well within the past year we have heard a lot of crap about it through the media. Some say its ok to eat, others say its the same as sugar, and then some say to stay away… so what the heck is going on? And which is it? Here are my thoughts on HFCS!!!

So is it bad for you? Yes, I would say yes it is. Here is why… Its hidden in sooo many foods that we either commonly eat, or in foods that you wouldn’t even think that have it, so technically we are eating more than were aware of. Its also processed and “man made” – being chemically modified into the “syrup”.

hfcs2

So when they say its the same as sugar or honey for example, yes sure it may be the same amount of calories.. (around 4 grams). But how they are metabolized and processed through the body are very different. HFCS is basically glucose that they treat with certain enzymes that help it convert into fructose. Since its 45-55 ratio and they are artificially generated, that makes them unstable. There are many studies out there saying that fructose can only be broken down by the liver as well. That being the case, making your HDL the “good cholesterol” lower and your LDL “Bad cholesterol” rising. ….. So  needless to say that its a “natural” sugar like they claim is like saying cigarettes are a form of herbal medicine lol.

So here is the main problem and WHY we are in such a huge obesity epidemic (if you ask me)… Pretty much everything (that’s processed in a way) has some form of corn in it, whether it be corn syrup, corn ingredients or corn sugar. Some foods you wouldn’t even think of it being in include: Cottage Cheese, Salad Dressings, Chocolate, Granola Bars, Waffles, Oatmeal, Pastries, Jelly and Jams, Yogurt, Cereal and the list can go on and on. …. Since its hidden in so many foods as Fruit fructose, Iso Glucose, chicory, Inulin and Glucose-Fructose Syrup people don’t realize how much they are actually consuming.  Personally I don’t even consider corn to even be a veggie, I consider it as a starch because when entered your body it basically turns into sugar right away, rising your blood sugar. No matter how much fiber it has, I can find better starches to eat.

hfcs3

Good News though! Companies are wising up, America is wising up and people are starting to be concerned with what actually goes into their foods nowadays! YAY! So a lot of companies are actually banning high fructose corn syrup from their products, they are making packaged goods without it and the more we don’t buy products because of it, the less it will be around! So be a smart cookie and read your labels!! =D

And this picture is brought to you by me being a  smart ass … lmao!
