So this month is going to be a little less strict, but still make it so that your eating a cleaner and healthy diet! I made this plan so that you can choose from the options for each meal so that way you wont feel bored or overwhelmed. Try to mix it up as you go and remember, you’re eating to fuel your body and give it the optimum nutrition it needs… therefore picking whole, complete and nutritious foods are ideal.
A cheat is ok here and there (hell, were all human right?!) But now I want you to start to notice how you feel when you eat healthy as opposed to not healthy and also remember to pace yourself, don’t push yourself too hard and don’t think miracles are going to happen over night, changing your lifestyle can take weeks, months and even years to learn how to incorporate into your life. Remember where you started and be proud of your accomplishments, but also don’t loose sight of what’s to come =)
TIPS BEFORE STARTING:
Drink 2-3liters of water a day.. if not more
You may have tea, coffee with stevia ad light creamer if needed
NO soft drinks and sugary juices!!! – make your own juice!
Make sure you’re getting a good amount of sleep
Get active! Find and new sport or play with your kids, there are many ways to “be active” without a gym.
No negative thoughts, stay positive!
Upon waking – 8oz water
**Add a multi- vitamin with breakfast (make sure you eat first because it will make you nauseous otherwise)
Protein shake made with low-fat milk or almond milk
Smoothie with both fruit and veggies
3 whole eggs, 3 egg whites scrambled with as many veggie as you want
1/2 cup plain oats – I have great oatmeal recipes here: Oatmeal 101
Greek Yogurt with 1/4 cup granola and fruit of choice
1/2 grapefruit with stevia (if needed), 1 slice whole wheat toast with almond/peanut butter
1 rice cake with almond/peanut butter on top, 1 piece of fruit
SOOO Good! Made this the other night and everyone in the family liked it!!
1 box Whole Wheat or gluten free linguini.
3 large skinless chicken breasts (cut into chunks, or you can buy the already cut up kind)
1 small container of mushrooms
3 cups baby spinach
8 small cherry tomatoes (halved)
1 small can sliced black olives
3 chives (chopped)
For the sauce – You’ll need:
2 tbsp. butter ( I used Earth Balance Brand)
4 Garlic cloves (mined)
4 tbsp. Whole-wheat flour or Gluten free flour.
1 1/2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth ( I used chicken this time) -LOOK for LOW SODIUM!!
1 1/2 cups Almond milk, or low-fat milk will work too.
3 teaspoons Parsley flakes
2/3 cup graded parmesan or mozzarella cheese
Salt and pepper to taste.
In large skillet, season chicken to taste with some chicken seasoning (I like Ms. Dash) and place in skillet. Add about 1/2 cup water and cover. (My mother taught me this trick when cooking chicken so it doesn’t dry out! =) …)
Meanwhile, in another med-large skillet, put in butter and garlic cloves till butter is melted and garlic is starting to break down. Cook for around 1 min. (this will be your sauce pan)
Start noodles according to package in large pot. And drain when does cooking. Set aside.
Go back to sauce pan, add flour and cook for 1 min, stirring so all the flour is dissolved evenly. After, add broth and almond milk, stirring occasionally till sauce thickens and boils. Then add parsley, salt, pepper and cheese into sauce and cook till cheese is melted and sauce is thick. Turn to simmer-low until ready to serve.
Meanwhile, to keep from burning your chicken, you can always add a little more water to pan and let simmer covered. Cook chicken till done (no pink in middle of the chunks) And when chicken is done, place in bowl and set aside to chop up. In same pan (leaving some of the chicken juices), put in a little olive oil, add spinach, tomatoes, chives, mushrooms and olives into the pan and sauté.
Cut cooked chicken on cutting board into bit size pieces and add to veggie mix.
Once everything is done, pile noodles on place, add as much veggie/chicken mix as desired and top with a little sauce … YUMM!!
So cutting calories for weight loss is an ideal thing to do if your consuming too many (most Americans are), but here are some tricks and tips that may have you thinking your being healthy, when in reality they may be hurting you…. or helping you keep on the weight you want to drop.
Picking poultry instead of beef– So yes, lean chicken and turkey are about as clean as clean eating can be but things like the ground up turkey for turkey burgers and such, often have the skin and darker meat ground in as well (things they don’t tell you- those bitches!). Darker meat has more calories when it comes to poultry by the way, that’s why whenever you read most diets, the often revolve around the breast of the bird since its all white meat. Where in retrospect, beef (LEAN beef), can be only 155 calories with 6 grams of fat, as compared to the ground up turkey at 205 calories and 14 grams of fat. *So how to fix– Look for labels that say lean (90%) on either one, beef or turkey.
No fat at all! – I know they have had this on the news but there are still people out there that think all fat is bad, and that just isn’t the case. The way fat works is……… Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are known as the “good fats” because they are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health.. It’s the trans fats, and saturated fats you have to avoid. Fat helps you stay fuller longer and it takes longer for your body to digest, therefore its a good thing because you wont be wanting food every hour on the hour. *So how to fix – Add good, satisfying fats to your food, think avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil. Plus good fats add loads of yummy flavors! – say no to boring food my lovely’s!
Think to yourself if your truly hungry – I have to do this sometimes because we get bored and out of habit, we eat. Its only human and natural to do that I think. But take a minute ( I like to drink a whole glass of water because sometimes your body is honestly just thirsty and wait about 10 minutes to figure out if I’m really hungry or not.) Take a deep breath and decide, if you are ..great eat a small healthy snack, if carrots and hummus or something along those lines doesn’t sound good, then you probably aren’t hungry and your bored. *So how to fix – find something else to take your mind off it. I like to pop some of that Deserts Extra brand gum in my mouth because it craved that sweet taste I’m looking for. They have all kind of flavors from root beer float to strawberry shortcake. I also go for a run, read a book, blog, play fetch with the dogs or even just watch a TV show… anything can help, you just have to find what works for you.
Everything Gluten Free – Don’t get me wrong I personally love gluten free foods. But not all of them are good for you. Just because fruit roll ups say they are gluten free, doesn’t mean you should eat them – don’t, they are full of sugar hhahah. But a lot of gluten free products like take baking with a GF flour for example, its sometimes made with things such as white rice or potatoes.. or both (double whammy). – This kind of flour doesn’t have as much fiber and nutrients as a regular whole wheat flour with the same amount of calories and sometimes even more! *So how to fix- Look for products that are made with quinoa or brown rice, they are a much healthier option and still gluten free. I like Bob’s Red Mill brand personally.
Sweet Drinks and Energy Drinks – OK… seriously? Do you really think that double espresso Rockstar is a wise choice for your health? Its full of caffeine (which your probably addicted to if you “need” it or it “helps you wake up and get going” in the mornings), not to mention full of sugar and just plan crap for your body. Do you think our bodies were meant to consume that??? Not so much. Also, most of those sports drinks are virtually calorie free, meaning they are full of fake sugar, even worse, your body doesn’t know how to digest that fake shit.. quit it. *So how to fix- Just stick to water, add fruit to it to make it taste better if you have to.
Giving Fruits and Veggies a quick rinse – Yes you should wash them. And yes it does kill off the pesticides, but you have to wash them for long enough. Usually people just lightly dip it under the sink and call it good, and that isn’t enough. Most pesticides have shown to slow metabolism and even mess with your thyroid gland. So yea, you may be getting all your nutrients because you’ve added more produce, but it might be sabotaging your weight loss. *so what’s the fix – Wash for 30 seconds each time. Also you technically can buy organic (another reason why you want try to buy organic when you can…) but not have to worry about washing it because there are no pesticides used in growing it. I wash mine anyways just to be safe…and clean.
Store Bought Smoothies- Yes they are healthier, but they may have as many calories as a cheeseburger- depending on which ones you get. They can have as low as 200 to as high as 1000. They add tons of fruit veggies but unfortunately, a shit ton of sugar (which usually fake sugar or syrups.) *So how to fix– Make your own and take it with you. They make serving size smoothie machines that make it super easy as a quick breakfast in the morning.. so you don’t really have an excuse A. not to make breakfast (because so many people don’t eat breakfast) And B. if your trying to loose weight and get healthy.. you need to be eating breakfast. Its just as serious as working out.
Ice cream vs. Frozen yogurt- You’d think so, but it actually have about the same amount of calories and sugars. So how to fix – Make your own yummy healthy “ice cream” I posted a link below about some healthy ice creams on Bodybuilding.com and I also posted an ice cream that’s made out of bananas.
Granola – Yeah it may seem so great with the oats and grains, your getting some good carbs right?? Wrong. If they didn’t use so mush sugar for one, but a lot of those little oats have added fats too to make it “granola”. But good news is that all granola isn’t bad and its super easy to make your own “healthier” version too. This goes for granola bars as well. Most granola bars are bonded together ..to make them a “bar” with all kinds of syrups and sugars. … And then some add chocolate into the mix too and then they almost become worse than some candy bars!! So… I’m sure you can make your own bars… (***OOO Striking a recipe challenge to post in future!) So how to fix – make your own! I attached a link below on some fun recipes to try. Also, When picking out granolas in the supermarket try to make sure sugar isn’t in the first 3 ingredients.. and I know its hard, but try not to pic the ones with all the candies in it. . . . its supposed to be a healthy choice, not desert.
Anything with the word DIET- Just stop. You know what’s healthy, fruits, veggies and lean meats. Its really not that hard, so stop trying to “wiggle” your way around it and find ways to cheat. You either want to be healthy, or you don’t. Just because something says calorie free does NOT mean its healthy and you should consume it …much less all the time! Whether its soda, a “vitamin-enhanced” water, or even a diet drink (i.e.. Slim fast) if it had fake sugar… its not healthy. Just hear me out…. When fake sugar (sweet n low, aspartame. Just to name a few) enters your body it turns into formaldehyde, Formaldehyde is something scientists use to “preserve and protect”. ….. Ew. Think about it for a minute. Google it. Quit preserving your butt with diet soda ok. So the fix- Drink waters, add fruit to it to make it taste better of your getting boded, I think they do make carbonated waters now a days too if its the carbonation your craving …. but make sure there isn’t fake sugar in it.
Bread Galore- Sandwich making has become a “fit” and “healthier option” when your on the go or at work. Well lets take the fact that people love their meat, so you know we either add a bunch of meat (Usually lunch meats, pre-package, and FULL of sodium) Or we get the Meat-iest sandwich we can at Subway. “Cold-cut trio me please!” Then we pile on the mayo, or sugar-laden salad dressings (because you know that don’t buy Organic and Natural brands!) Pile on the smallest amount veggies and a lot of cheese ….on a foot long. So the fix is – So when you do make a sandwhich on some Eziekiel bread, or Udis. … Some OTHER form of Healthy Bread, (how to pick a healthy bread- **coming up in a post soon!) to put your sandwich on. http://shop.udisglutenfree.com/ppcdo/search/google?gclid=CKuO-IbtlLgCFc1cMgodXUgAzA and please, make veggies the main part of it.
So I love oat meal, whether its just plain or the usual cinnamon. But here are some great ideas for “spicing” up your oatmeal so you don’t have the same boring bowl all the time! =) ……… and you’ll get some great nutrients, save some calories and your taste buds will be happy campers.
First choose how your going to prepair it!
Water is a great option to keep calories down (this is my usual “go to”)
1% milk will have more creamier effect rather than the skim milk.
Almond milk and coconut milk can be great for adding a little flavor as well. (I like the vanilla kind)
Juice, now this might sound weird , but its actually not bad. Make sure you get 100% juice so you wont be adding a shit-ton of sugar and it will be adding some extra vitamins too! I like apple juice with the apples and cinnamon kind! YUMMI *note: some juices are very strong so you might want to do half juice and half water.
NOW, for the fun part! TOPPINGS!
Dried fruits – you can either add them after making the oatmeal, so they are kinda crunchy. Or add them when your making it and they will plump up and get all juicy (cranberries, cherries, blueberries, mango, coconut, papaya ect)
Peanut Butter and Almond Butter
Fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, banana, black berries, raspberries, pear, apples, cuties, mango, pomegranate, ect. )
Dark chocolate chips
Greek yogurt or Almond milk yogurt
REAL maple syrup
crumbled gram crackers
Canned pumpkin in the fall is awesome! add some cinnamon too .. mmmm
Sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds
Jam – or use warmed up frozen berries
Chopped nuts. Almonds, Walnuts, cashews.
I have heard of people putting an egg over the top too… never tried but but it might be worth giving it a whirl!
So I was actually in a thrift store when I stumbled upon this book, thinking it was another book on health and fitness. I bought it right away! ….
When you look at the book, it doesn’t really clarify what kind of diet it actually is. it just says “a no-nonsense, tough-love guide for savey girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous!” …. sounds alright so far.. ok
Let me start by saying this… Skinny Bitch is not a diet book, its not your typical high protein low carb mumbo jumbo we always hear about. Its a vegan way of living and how to do so guide. I however didn’t realize this until I got into the book about 3 to 4 chapters when they start talking about dairy, eggs and meat. It doesn’t clarify anything about being a veganism book in the description, nor on the front of back. So if I was totally against being vegetarian or vegan, this book probably would have pissed me off. lol.
With that being said, I’m not against it at all and I love hearing other peoples views on nutrition always so I kept reading.
I think my favorite part of this book was the no bullshit way they lay it out. Now, being the potty mouth that I can be, I loved her tone she had throughout the entire book, very trucker like. This book is full of a-holes, f-bombs and much, much more. So if you’re not really into all that, this book would probably be very offensive to some. . . .
So all in all, here are some pro’s and con’s of what I thought of the book.
The direct way they deliver things. They have no shame in saying it like it is.
Their credibility, they cite everything they say with being prepared to back up their info.
I’m not a fan of Adkins diet already, so they totally explain why this diet isn’t the best….. oh because your body needs CARBS lol.
They do have a love for the environment, love for animals, and being healthy (which most vegans do)
It exploits the government and how they have shaped our food to benefit themselves rather than our wellbeing. In Chapter 9 it gives some pretty good information about how dairy and meat farms really are which I think everyone should read whether or not you eat meat. Along with the cruelty that goes behind the slaughter houses and how your food really is treated before its “your food” I was just baffled about how things go down…..
Its not just about no meat, no dairy yada-yada. They go into detail about sugar, fake sugar, caffeine, getting your body in the right pH levels and even pooping .. yes pooping… they cover it all baby!
At the end, you actually start thinking about what you eat, where it came from, how its prepared … and all the above.. I don’t know if its the way they phrased it that made it so blunt .. but it worked for me.
Oh! and if you were thinking … what the hell kind of butter is vegan? They give you a list of alternatives that can help with finding your “milk, cheese and burgers” that are all vegan friendly so you’re not totally in the dark.
It can get a tad bit repetitive ..
It talks about being prefect and perfection…. which isn’t possible and has taken me personally a while to learn.
They seem to favor “vegan” articles and books when it comes to citing, which who blames them , it makes it easier to agree with someone who already agrees with you, but it would be nice to hear something from the other party too.
It can be offensive to some with the language. With the .. “Caffeine is for pussies” p.15. “Because we are having so much fun let’s bash the shit out of Splenda” p.35.. “You need to exercise you lazy shit” p.20… so needless to say it can be a bit overboard and demeaning… but personally cried to myself in laughter.
I love chicken, I can enjoy a nice steak…but I usually eat bison and wild game meat…. do I want it 24/7 now, not really, but yea I’ll probably continue to eat it every so now and then…. I also live with a few guys who hunt, so therefore, I get the” cream of the crop” because usually all the meat I eat is grass fed, in its natural environment, and /or killed at the very spot, non of this slaughter house, trapped in cages, beaten to death kind of crap.
If you want to learn more about slaughterhouses.. watch meet your meat… its disgusting! and lets just say I found that movie right after I read this book.. lovely combo .. NOT. I was slightly mortified after that….
